About Us |
|
We are a network of people who are trying to protect the leafy character of our suburbs, the health of our communities and the natural environment. Plans for a petition began in 2005 and after considerable input from a number of people the petition was finally tabled in the parliament of Western Australia in September 2006. Much information was supplied to the Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs during the many months leading up to the Committees final Recommendation in 2007. Copious letters, newspaper articles and emails have been forwarded to the Committee, the Ministers for Environment (State and Federal) Health, Local Government as well as other local and state authorities.
As 2007 progressed the issues of tree removal and the loss of trees and vegetation due to the use of herbicides on public and private land became integral to the Save Our Trees campaign. The Committees Recommendation ignored the petitions request for a moratorium on tree removal but recommended that:
..the Minister for Local Government with the support of the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure in conjunction with local governments develop a model tree policy for protecting mature trees in urban areas.
Why was the Enviroment Minister not included in the Recommendation along with the two other Ministers?

The purpose of this website is:
1.To make publicly available the information forwarded to the parliamentary Committee and managers of Environment, Health and various state and local authorities.
2.To make the community aware of the positive role that politicians and bureaucrats can play in making the necessary changes to prevent environmental degradation due to Tree Removal policies and the use of Herbicides on public and private land. If these public servants accepted our challenge, they could play a significant role in mitigating the negative effects on our health, the natural environment and Climate Change.
The Environment Ministers ACT NOW AWARD could be given to the government if only it would implement the necessary changes to outlaw the ongoing destruction of mature trees and native vegetation. Both the Environment Minister and the Health Minister must ACT NOW to also outlaw :
1)The sale of Synthetic Chemical pesticides and herbicides to the general public and 2) The Use of these herbicides and pesticides on public land.
Our politicians will be judged by the decisions that they make NOW. Will the decisions be for the public good or for propping up unsustainable or unhealthy practices? Tell the Ministers that you want them to make the changes NOW! Dont forget to ask the Ministers for Local Government and Planning and Infrastructure when the Model Tree Policy will be ready and if they will invite Save Our Trees to be represented in the working group, and if they know how many thousands of trees will continue to be removed while we wait. See how the City of South Perth has removed 500 of its 700 Cape Lilacs.
Click On SOUTH PERTH VERGE TREES and read how the Carr Street residents campaigned to stop the destruction of their Cape Lilac Street Trees. This is just an example of what is going on throughout our suburbs. Many councils continue to remove street trees rather than look after them, and we are being left with hot, barren streetscapes.
